The Daily News in Longview, Wash., seeks a talented sports journalist to complete a four-person staff. One of our longtime sports writers did such a great job hunting down the news on our local sports scene that he's been promoted.
 Our area’s prep sports scene is rich in history, intense in rivalry and consistently produces state playoff teams in all three seasons. We place a high value on writing about the people who make the games so interesting. The ideal candidate has a firm grasp of AP style, the ability to write clear, concise stories on tight deadlines, the ability to develop news reports on your own initiative and without direction, experience using multimedia platforms, and the news judgment necessary to determine what does or does not make a story.  The right person will be able to find the news on the local sports beats as well as write features, columns, and game stories. Must have daily deadline experience and clips that show a wide range of sports coverage as well as story forms: beat, features, and enterprise.
This position requires setting priorities and building contacts within the sports community. Experience with newspaper design, layout, photography, and video would be a plus. The Times, a 133-year-old community weekly based in Waitsburg, Wash., is seeking an aggressive, hard-working, creative, thoughtful and imaginative young journalist to become its managing editor.
You will be working directly for two longtime professionals who bought this well-established and well-liked publication in late 2009 and brought their insights from such dailies as the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and the Dallas Times Herald to cover the Touchet Valley 25 miles north of Walla Walla.
The candidate must have a journalism passion and education, flexibility to work odd hours, interest in all aspects of a culturally diverse and changing community, and willingness to lead production when necessary.
The candidate will work directly with the newspaper’s publisher and editor. Tasks will include but not be limited to: reporting, writing and taking pictures; editing the work of community writers; initiating and planning in-depth reports; learning and mastering InDesign layout software, and preparing uploads for a planned new website.
