The Foundation brochure has details about the Foundation's programs, funding and directors.

Student Internship Scholarships

Since the first internship scholarship was awarded in 1989, more than 100 students have spent part of a summer as WNPA Foundation intern at a community newspaper in Washington.

Applicants must be nominated by their college or university's journalism or communications department in Washington, or by a WNPA-member newspaper. Interested college students should contact their school's journalism department. Applications are due in early February.

The Foundation funds the program through donations by publishers and an annual silent auction, as well as through income from named endowments. These include the Bruce and Betty Helberg Internship Scholarship (est. 1988), the Verizon Northwest Internship Scholarship (1990), Richard W. Gay Internship Scholarship (1990), the Jim and Kay Flaherty Internship Scholarship (1993), and the Bruce A. Wilson-Henry Gay Internship Scholarship (2012).

Zubrod Legislative Reporting Internship
Jerry Zubrod retired in 1988 after serving 23 years as WNPA executive director.  With donations from many of his former colleagues, an endowment for this internship was established in his name in 2005. Zubrod died in 2001.

Washington state universities nominate third- or fourth-year students for this reporting internship. Interns work during the legislative session in Olympia, Wash., with Rowland Thompson, the executive director of Allied Daily Newspapers of Washington.

College students with a high level of self motivation and strong interest in learning about legislative issues of concern to newspapers in Washington state are eligible. In addition to journalism students, students majoring in communications, law or political science are encouraged to apply.  Applications are due in December.

Previous Zubrod interns are Christina Smailes (2009), Jennifer Henrichsen (2007) and Aaron Brauer-Rieke (2006). All are graduates of Pacific Lutheran University, though applicants from other universities are welcome.

Educator-in-Residence
The Foundation launched the Educator-in-Residence program to provide high school and college level teachers with hands-on work experiences at community newspapers. Since the program's successful first year, 2000, the Foundation has funded more than 25 Educators in Residence.

The teachers intern for 80 hours at WNPA-member newspapers during the summer. When they return to the classroom, they have fresh, real-life experiences in community journalism with which they can inspire and inform their students. Educators in Residence receive a $1,000 stipend, of which 75 percent comes from the Foundation and the remainder from the host newspaper. Applications are typically due in February.

Publisher-in-Residence

Under the Publisher-in-Residence program, ongoing since 1981, community newspaper publishers visit university journalism programs, spending an afternoon or up to three days. Depending on the school's needs the publisher discusses news gathering, ethics, advertising, business management, multi-media skills, career opportunities or other topics requested by the professor. The publishers also typically meet with the staff of the student newspaper. Many do professional critiques of news products. Download our informational flyer.

Participating publishers are encouraged to make a donation to the Foundation, which assumed administration of this WNPA program in 2006.
