The Chinook Observer, current Washington state General Excellence winner, is the 118-year-old news source for an island-like seashore peninsula on Washington state’s wild outer coast, where the Columbia River meets the Pacific. We are a small paper that does big journalism in print and online.

Your primary beat will be government, including two city councils, a county commission, public utility boards, and county, state and federal agencies. This is a great job for a highly motivated, self-directed reporter with boundless curiosity. You will be expected to publish three to six bylines each week, help with production, and perform some light office duties. Manage your time well, and you will have room to pursue projects that excite you. You must be willing to give and receive constructive feedback. We believe tough, independent news coverage must coexist with a sincere customer-service attitude.

While we love our idyllic setting and brilliant neighbors, our coastal communities struggle with economic and environmental change. As one our reporters, you’ll be expected to become an expert and help interpret all this — plus all the good stuff.

The good stuff includes pristine Willapa Bay, largest single source of the nation’s oysters. A major regional tourist destination, our population swells to 75,000 on peak summer weekends. Bolstering our reputation as a center for historical/cultural tourism are Lewis and Clark National Park, Cape Disappointment State Park and Willapa National Wildlife Refuge. Lifestyle attractions include world-class pedestrian and water trails, dozens of miles of beach, amazing wildlife, and close proximity to Astoria, Oregon — the West Coast’s oldest American city — as well as Portland and Seattle.

Vanity Fair’s Buzz Bissinger and Oregonian feature-writing star Tom Hallman — both Pulitzer Prize winners — are among our neighbors and subscribers. Krist Noveselic of Nirvana is another active member of our amazing communities. “Your paper represents all that is good in journalism. You respect your readers, challenge them when need be, and remind them of the place and people in the community they call home,” Hallman commented.

Our dedicated family-owned company provides benefits including Paid Time Off (PTO), insurances and a 401(k)/Roth 401(k) retirement plan.  Send clips, resume and letter of interest to EO Media Group, PO Box 2048, Salem, OR 97308-2048, or e-mail
